Operating an ATV can be both fun and hazardous if the rider does not take
certain precautions. One thing a rider can do is better understand their
machine and riding techniques by attending a safety class. Remember, an ATV is
not a toy and can be hazardous to operate. They handle differently than a car
or motorcycle, especially on hills or rough terrain.
Wisconsin
has a few different options for safety education. It is recommended that at
least one of the classes be attended (unless you are required by law to attend
a safety class). All ATV riders who ride on public riding areas (trails,
frozen waters, routes, permitted county and/or forest lands, etc.) who are at
least age 12 and who were born on or after January 1, 1988
must have completed a safety certification course. These ATV operators must
carry their safety certification card and they must display it to law
enforcement officers when requested.
Here are the two different classes you can take, click on the title to visit
the official page:
1.
Department of Natural Resources Class
This class, if passed, will grant you a safety training certificate that the
DNR will honor.
2. ATV Safety Institute Safety Class
This class, if passed, will not be honored by the DNR as a
valid safety course for those who fall under the mandatory safety education law
